Fun While We're Learning? I Should Hope So

As mentioned before, I had planned a handful of compass and map activities that were to supplement our studies from last week. I thought that Bubbles would have more fun running through the woods with a bunch of friends. I was right.

We began our lesson inside with a mini lesson on maps, cardinal and intermediate directions, and how to get a bearing on your compass. From there we went outside. The younger kids went with one mom and had three treasures to find using the cardinal directions only. They followed the directions on their first and second card which led them to different parts of the yard. The first treasure was some candy, but the second treasure was a map of the yard. They had to orient themselves to the map first to figure out how to get to the X which is where the third treasure was. It was pretty funny to see them using their compass sprinting across the yard with no regard to direction because they knew exactly where they were supposed to be headed.

The older kiddos had a different task. I had gone out into the woods and tied six red ribbons, with numbers on them, all around. There were three different sets of directions which led to a specific tree. They teamed up (boys vs. girls) and raced off. Hubby went out there too in case they had difficulty or became turned around and felt lost. They used intermediate directions as well as a numerical bearing to find the right ribbon. Then they came back to report to me the number on the ribbon. If they were right, they received another clue card and started off again. The first team to get all three ribbons correctly, WON! I ended up calling it a tie. Both girls and boys came sprinting out of the woods shouting their last ribbon number. I couldn't tell who started yelling first. In the end they didn't care because they all received their prize package of candy.

It was a fabulous day of fun, friends, learning and awesome weather on top of it all.
